Severe Cold and Flu Season Continues into 2019

It’s that time of year, you feel a tickle in your throat, the dreaded runny nose has started, and then the fever and coughing begin. This year the Center for Disease Control estimates that Between 6.2 million and 7.3 million people in the U.S. have been sick with the flu since October, according to data released January 11,2019.
At least half of those people have sought medical care for their illness, federal health officials estimated, and between 69,000 and 84,000 people have been hospitalized from Oct. 1 through Jan. 5. The flu season typically starts in October, with activity tending to peak between December and February, according to the CDC.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting a flu shot as the first step to reduce the chances of coming down with the flu. The CDC also recommends taking everyday measures, like practicing good hand hygiene and disinfecting and cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects.
Cold and Flu Prevention Tips
- Illness-causing germs live on frequently touched surfaces, disinfect them often.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based sanitizers are also effective.
- Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands. Use a tissue or cough or sneeze into your elbow instead.
- If you’re sick – stay home.
Disinfecting
Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces. This process uses chemicals (other than soap/detergent and water) to kill all germs and bacteria. Disinfecting also lowers the risk of spreading infection.
Hand Sanitizing
The CDC recommends using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. The CDC also recommends regular hand washing, before and after certain activities, to avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others.
